2007 Remake Timeline

"Hey, my dad is the sheriff, huh? Why don't you go crawl back under your fucking rock?"
―Annie shouting to Michael Myers[src]

Annie Brackett (ca. 1990 - October 31, 2009) is a major character in the Halloween remake timeline, based on one of the original teenage victims in the classic Halloween and played by Danielle Harris. It should be noted that Harris had also portrayed Jamie Lloyd, a younger girl targeted by Michael Myers in a previous Halloween timeline.

Biography[]

Child Annie with her dog

Little Annie Brackett and her dog

Annie Brackett was born to Lee Brackett and his wife some time in the early 1990s in Haddonfield, Illinois. When she was younger, she was given a puppy and seemed to have a very happy and normal childhood. What happened to her mother is unknown. Eventually, she became friends with schoolmates Laurie Strode and Lynda Van der Klok.

Cheekiness

Annie and her friend Lynda mock brutal killer Michael Myers

It was the afternoon of Halloween 2007 and Annie was studying at school, as well as begging Laurie to babysit Lindsey Wallace in her stead as she wanted to secretly meet up with her boyfriend Paul, who had been grounded. After some hesitation, Laurie agreed to help her with her plan. After school, Annie and her two friends walked home discussing the events of the day. On that day, she was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, her school jacket, a short skirt that showcased her legs and a ribbon in her hair. She had short dark hair and was smaller than other girls her age. Not only the most childlike but also the more playful and sassy of the trio, Annie enjoyed making fun of everything and everyone, and as they walked she called the very sexual Lynda a "slut", which ultimately hurt her friend's feelings. Soon afterwards, Laurie pointed to an imposing masked man that was observing them from across the street. Believed to be just a dirty pervert - when he was in fact Laurie's brother, the escaped serial killer Michael Myers - the stranger was taunted by Lynda from a safe distance with Annie joining the fun with a profanity-laced warning of her own: she informed him that her dad was the town's sheriff and advised to stay away. The disturbing man left after that, and the girl was pleased of having turned him away. As they continued to walk, Annie's father soon drove by and offered them a ride, although Annie was the only one to accept, taking a ride home in her dad's police car.[2]

Grab your coat we're going

The girl avoids the Butcher's knife

That night, Annie arrived at the Strode home to pick Laurie up and drop her off at Tommy Doyal's house for her babysitting appointment. Annie then attended her own at the Wallace home, where she only spent a brief time watching Lindsey before calling Laurie to put her plan in motion. At first, she had trouble getting Lindsey to grab her coat and go out to go to Tommy's house, but Lindsey relented and the two girls began to walk towards the Doyal home, Annie pained about having to carry Lindsey's large pumpkin. Unbeknownst to them, Michael Myers was in the house, stalking Annie. Bent on the demise of Laurie's friends and family and, especially, cruel retribution against her two insolent schoolmates, Michael had already killed Lynda by strangling her. But when he saw the other offender go out into the street with Lindsey, he resorted to following her silently.[2]

Paul and Annie Halloween 2007

Only after Annie leaves herself nude at her boyfriend's insistence does Michael attack

While at the Doyal house, Annie jokingly insisted on finding Laurie a boyfriend, until Paul arrived. He and Annie decided to go back to the Wallace home so Michael, who was lurking outside, followed them there again. As they cuddled up and started kissing avidly, Michael watched them from the shadows. Already without her school jacket and hair ribbon, Annie found herself being pushed by Paul to kiss with her shirt off: at first unprepared to go that far, she ended up agreeing and getting rid of her long-sleeved shirt. Her bra soon followed, and so Annie went barechested for her boyfriend - who did not do the same.[2]

Feeling more sexually aroused in her newfound state of nudity, she asked him if he wanted to have carnal relations with her, which Paul agreed to, further kissing her and complimenting her for being a very attractive girl. Michael allowed Annie to feel her boyfriend's touch for a short while before going to hunt her at such intimate time. In their amorous activity, the youngsters failed to notice Michael approaching them until he grabbed and killed Paul with one stroke of his knife, eliciting Annie's tears and horrified screams.[2]

2007 Annie outmatched & uncovered

The shirtless schoolgirl facing the masked murderer

Shirtless and exposed, the schoolgirl then hurried to the front door, running outside, but was denied her escape at the last second when Michael caught her by one of her arms, pulled her back in and closed the door, yet she was able to break his hold. Braving a fight with the sizable sadistic killer despite her own little body, the nude and unarmed girl made her move: instead of finding refuge (and clothes) in a room or another way out, she ran to the kitchen to search for a weapon of her own, managing to retrieve a knife from a drawer just before the man could retrieve her. Initiating the risky clash, Annie took her one chance to attack: she swung at him, but only to be beaten down and disarmed. Michael was then free to examine the bold girl lying on the floor, left in a short skirt, with his appetite for a very cruel and bloody kill able to be satisfied: being tortured to death is what Annie was chosen for, yet she in her stunned state still struggled to avoid such gruesome end with a desperate attempt to crawl away from the sick man, but was soon stopped when he grabbed her by a leg and dragged his new plaything across the kitchen floor to the harsh corporal punishment that awaited her. With no chance left to avoid it, the girl could only cry while being taken away.[2]

You Must Prepare Your Bosom For His Knife

Knocked down by Michael who wants to enact her torture

Back at Tommy Doyal's, Laurie handled double babysitter duty while waiting for Annie, unaware that her classmate was being mercilessly tortured. When Laurie thought it was time she brought Lindsey home herself, she instructed little Tommy to behave in her absence then walked the younger girl to her residence, where they saw Paul's corpse hung with a rope (likely the implement used to immobilize Annie) and Annie herself lying on the floor with her back to them. Turning her over revealed all the bloody cuts on her half-naked body and that her abuser stopped short of bringing her to death, instead leaving her to a longer agony.[2]

This prompted Laurie to send Lindsey out for help while she called 9-1-1. While her friend was on the phone, Annie saw the torturer, who was only hiding from view, moving about the house again. Still on the floor, too weakened to move, she cried out for Laurie's attention - but the latter was busy calling for help. His attention now on Laurie, Michael left Annie to die where she lied while he chased after his sister, who ran away from him and out of the house. Thanks to the call, though, Sheriff Brackett later arrived on the scene along with Dr. Loomis and found his savaged daughter, then urged her to stay conscious while they waited for the paramedics.[2]

Picking up the pieces[]

In the wake of the attack, Annie was taken to Haddonfield General Hospital where she had to have surgery, which she did manage to heal from, although Michael Myers left lasting scars, both physical and emotional. Within two years, Annie was able to make a full recovery. However, scars could still be found on her skin and she had matured and was no longer the same girl she once was. In a sense, she became very motherly towards both her father and her friend.[3]

Scarred Annie

Annie's scarred visage from her first encounter with Michael years earlier

The same, however, could not be said for Laurie, who lost her parents, was also nearly killed by Michael and shot him in the face only to discover that they never found his body after they lost it in an accident. Laurie then went to live with Annie and her father. The two girls eventually became close enough to see themselves as sisters, yet Laurie had so much rage built up in her that their relationship was very rocky. Deep down, Laurie blamed herself for what happened to Annie and also admitted to her therapist that seeing the scars on her face sometimes made her want to hurt her friend in some way, for reminding her of what had happened two years prior.[3]

Eventually, Laurie made new friends (Mya Rockwell and Harley David), whom Annie did not like very much and felt were a bad influence on her. It is not apparent if Annie got a job, went to college, made new friends or began dating anyone, as she was never shown to leave the house.[3]

Lee had also gotten very protective of both girls as, on Halloween 2008, he sent a deputy named Andy Neale to watch over Annie. She did not like this and kicked Deputy Neale in the groin.[3]

Another Halloween night[]

On October 30, 2009, Annie and Laurie had another one of their fights when Annie voiced her dislike of the "new" Laurie, and how she kept acting like she was the only one who went through hardships that Halloween night two years before.[3]

Halloween II 2009 Brace for Michael's revenge

Annie sees that Michael has invaded her home

On October 31, Lee called his daughter, asking her to look for Laurie and, if she found her, to tell her to stay home so he could talk to her. When Annie asked what was wrong, her father said that he would tell her at a later time. As the day went on, Lee began to worry about his daughter's safety but, at the same time, wanted her to remain in the house in case Laurie returned.[3]

At first, he called Darren on to visit Annie. However, the youngster's stay was brief as he and Annie had little in common and she was clearly annoyed about having him over.[4] After she got him to leave, the sheriff had Deputy Neale go over to the house to once again watch over Annie. As soon as he arrived, an annoyed Annie would not let him into the house, also telling him to turn off the emergency lights of his squad car.[3]

Annie Brackett Halloween 2 death

Annie dies in the arms of Laurie

Later in the night, Lee's worst fears came true as Michael Myers was still alive and searching for his sister. He made his way to the Brackett home where he strangled Deputy Neale to death and broke into the house. Unaware of what had just happened, Annie was preparing to take a bath. As she was getting ready, she failed to notice Michael watching her in the mirror. She then sensed someone was in there with her, and saw that it was the killer.[3]

Annie desperately tried to escape, but was quickly caught by Michael, who smashed her against the walls, dropped shelves on her and beat her, then carried her battered body back into the bathroom, to be left without her bathrobe and entirely covered in her own blood once he was done with her. Leaving the slashed-up girl on the floor, he then went downstairs. Moments later, Laurie returned home with her friend Mya from partying. After eating some cookies and Laurie telling Mya how she felt about Annie, they decided to go upstairs. As soon as Laurie turned on the lights, she saw the destruction that had happened and opened the bathroom door to discover a dying Annie. Laurie had Mya call 9-1-1 while she tried to take care of her friend. Annie begged Laurie to leave and save herself, however, Laurie was too distraught to just leave her friend. She cradled Annie in her arms until she finally died.[3]

Annie would be avenged when her father and his policemen shot and killed Michael Myers later that night.[3]

Appearances[]

Notes and trivia[]

  • This version of Annie is the first (and so far only) one to survive the film in which she first appears.
  • It is also interesting to note that, in both Rob Zombie films, Michael attacks Annie, but does not kill her outright. She survives Halloween and dies later after the attack in Halloween II.
  • According to Rob Zombie's DVD commentary, Annie's nickname of "Munchie" was originally the name of Max Van Ville (Paul)'s pet dog.
  • The original's Annie Brackett famously never wore a bra, but she had a shirt on when Michael attacked her. Conversely, the new Annie is not a braless girl as seen when she takes off her shirt for her boyfriend, but she also takes off her bra and ends up facing the knife-wielding maniac with her chest exposed.
  • By the dates given in Halloweencomics.com, Lynda was over 18 in the original while Annie was not. With no reason to assume otherwise for this version, the remake would be the only film with an underage child who is nude while the adult Michael Myers attacks her (Annie, who unlike in the original does not have a shirt on when she encounters him).
  • On the other hand, her attacker is confirmed to be several years older than in the original.
  • Laurie should also be slightly older, her forgotten time as Angel Myers adding to the years she spent living as Laurie Strode. This makes Annie the youngest of the girls.
  • Annie is also the only character to display nudity and survive in the same Halloween film.
  • One of the trailers for the remake digitally adds a bra to her body during her attack, since in the actual scene her nipples are exposed.
  • Annie's portrayer is Danielle Harris, who also starred as Jamie Lloyd in Halloween 4 and 5. While Jamie survives until the time another actor takes over the role, Annie does die in 2009's Halloween II.
